Although I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to go to college for, I was fairly certain that it wasn't for teaching. My mom kept asking me if I was sure that I didn't want to study Education, and I kept ignoring her. I didn't realize until my first semester in college that the major I was in, was not what I really had a passion for. I realized then that I must have really inherited the passion for teaching from my parents. My mom is a social studies and economics high school teacher and my dad is a special education high school teacher.
I always saw education as a vital part of my life, but never pictured myself as the teacher, just the student. Once I took EDC 250 and was placed in a high school Chemistry classroom in Woonsocket, I knew that I wanted to teach science and I could see myself as the teacher instead of the student.
I also worked as a camp counselor for the past 5 summers and that was another inspiration for my desire to teach. I loved watching the children grow and help them to learn new things. They always put a smile on my face when they finally understood the new card game I taught them, or when they learned how to tie their shoes. I felt like I was changing their lives, and they were reassuring me of my decision to teach.
Tutoring at the Academic Enhancement Center has also made me sure that I want to teach science. I love working with all different kinds of students and helping them to succeed. When a student solves a problem correctly and is excited that they understand it, I feel like I've made a difference and I've done my job.
I can't wait until I have a classroom of my own where I can get to know my students and work with them to understand and enjoy science.
